The short answer
The five local coffee shops I recommend most in the Triangle are Sola Coffee Cafe in North Raleigh, Jubala Coffee in Raleigh, The Optimist in Raleigh's Oakwood area, Sonder Coffee in Wendell Falls, and Count Coffee in Morrisville, with an honorable mention for Quarter Note Coffee in North Raleigh. Each one gives you a different slice of what life in the Triangle actually feels like.
I'm Meredith Diamond, a Raleigh real estate agent and the founder of Diamond Realty Group. I spend most of my week driving between neighborhoods across Wake County, which means I have an unofficial second job as a coffee shop scout. This is the next edition of Meredith's Hometown Favorites, where I share the local spots that make the Triangle feel like home.
Why a real estate agent is writing about coffee
Because where you get your coffee is part of where you live.
When buyers ask me what a neighborhood is really like, the honest answer is not in the listing photos. It is in the coffee shop down the street where neighbors run into each other on Saturday morning, the place with live music on the patio, the café you can walk to when you need to get out of the house. These are the details that turn a house into a home and a zip code into a community, and they are exactly the kind of thing I want my clients to know before they decide where to land.
Last time we talked ice cream. This time, coffee.
The five best local coffee shops in the Triangle
Whether you are looking for a really good latte, somewhere to meet a friend, or a change of scenery for a workday, here are five local coffee shops worth adding to your list this fall.
1. Sola Coffee Cafe (North Raleigh)
Sola Coffee Cafe is the neighborhood gathering spot of North Raleigh, and the fresh mini donuts alone are worth the trip.
Sola is one of those places that feels like so much more than a coffee shop. It has a true neighborhood feel, regular community events, and live music, and you absolutely cannot go without trying the mini donuts made fresh throughout the day. They also have a great breakfast and lunch menu, so this is an easy pick when you want coffee and something good to eat.
Best for: Weekend mornings, families, and getting a feel for the North Raleigh community.
2. Jubala Coffee (multiple Raleigh locations)
Jubala Coffee is the Raleigh pick for people who really appreciate a good cup of coffee, with locations across the city.
Jubala has several locations around Raleigh, including North Hills, Downtown, Lafayette Village, North Raleigh, and Hillsborough Street, so there is almost always one near wherever you are house hunting. The espresso is excellent, but I'm also a fan of the scratch-made biscuits and Liege waffles. It is one of those reliable local favorites that works for a quick coffee or a slow morning.
Best for: Serious coffee drinkers, and a consistent stop no matter which part of Raleigh you are exploring.
3. The Optimist (Brookside Drive, near Oakwood)
The Optimist is my pick for great coffee in a great atmosphere, and one of the best places in Raleigh to work from for a few hours.
The Brookside Drive location near historic Oakwood has a beautiful modern interior, really good signature lattes, and a breakfast and brunch menu that makes it easy to stay awhile. It is also one of my go-to spots when I need to get out of the house and work from a coffee shop.
Best for: Remote workdays, brunch with a friend, and anyone falling in love with the Oakwood and Five Points side of Raleigh.
4. Sonder Coffee (Wendell Falls)
Sonder Coffee roasts its own beans in Wendell Falls and is worth the drive east from Raleigh, especially for the seasonal latte flights.
If you find yourself in Wendell Falls, or need an excuse to head that direction, Sonder is worth it. They roast their own coffee, the café is bright and welcoming, and the seasonal latte flights make this one especially fun this time of year. It has that community coffee-shop feel I love, with a menu that gives you a reason to keep coming back.
Best for: Exploring the growing Wendell Falls community, and a fall latte flight.
5. Fount Coffee (Morrisville)
Fount Coffee is the local favorite to know if you live or work on the Morrisville side of the Triangle.
Rounding out my five is Fount Coffee in Morrisville. This is a great one to keep in mind if you are in the Research Triangle Park corridor and want to skip the usual coffee chain and try somewhere local instead.
Best for: RTP commuters, and anyone considering Morrisville, Cary, or western Wake County.
Honorable mention: Quarter Note Coffee (North Raleigh)
Quarter Note Coffee is a cozy, music-inspired North Raleigh spot for specialty espresso and local pastries, open weekdays only.
I could not make this list without giving Quarter Note a mention. It has a warm, music-inspired atmosphere, specialty espresso drinks, and local pastries, and it is especially great if you are looking for somewhere to sit down and work or study for a bit. One thing to know before you go: Quarter Note is only open on weekdays, so save this one for a Monday through Friday coffee run.
Best for: Weekday work sessions and study breaks.
What your favorite coffee shop says about your next neighborhood
If you found yourself drawn to one of these more than the others, that is useful information.
Love the walkable, historic-home energy around The Optimist? You may be an Oakwood, Five Points, or Mordecai person. Drawn to Sonder's community feel in Wendell Falls? You might be looking for newer construction, planned amenities, and a little more space east of the city. Count Coffee regulars tend to be RTP commuters who want a short drive to work in Morrisville or Cary. And if Sola feels like home, North Raleigh's established neighborhoods, good schools, and easy access to everything might be your fit.
This is exactly the kind of lifestyle question I ask when helping clients decide where to buy in the Triangle. If you want a head start, the Neighborhood Match Quiz on our site takes a few minutes and sends you a personalized report on which Raleigh-area neighborhoods fit the way you actually live.
